Hastanın ağzında yapılacak bir işlem yani indirekt yöntemle laboratuvar veya model üzerinden yapılması gerekiyorsa hastanın ağzından bir ölçü alıp ağzın şeklinin bir kalıba dökülmesi yöntemidir. Hastanın ağzında yapılacak olan işlemler hasta üzerinde uygulanmayıp önceden dışarıda bir ortamda laboratuvar ortamında veya klinikte model üzerinde hazırlanması gerektiği zaman hastanın ağzından bir ölçü alıp kalıbının çıkarılması yöntemidir. Ölçü almanın çeşitli teknikleri vardır. Ölçü almada eski geleneksel teknikler olduğu gibi yeni nesil dijital tarama teknikleri de mevcuttur. Geleneksel teknikte hamur gibi bir materyalin ölçü kaşığıyla birlikte ağız içersine yerleştirilip donması beklenir ve çenenin kalıbı materyal donduktan sonra ağızdan çıkartılır. Ağzın ölçüsü modele yansımış olur ve çenenin kalıbını çıkartabilecek bir ölçümüz olmuş olur. Geleneksel teknik dışında dijital tarama yönteminde ise ağız içi kamera sistemlerini kullanmaktayız. Bu kamera sistemleri saniyede binlerce foto çekerek bu fotoğraf karelerini birleştirip ağız içersindeki görüntüyü net bir sekilde bilgisayar ortamına aktarır ve agız ölçüsünü bilgisayarla tamamlamış olur. Dijital tama yöntemlerinin geleneksel yönteme göre en önemli avantajı bulantı refleksi oluşturan ölçü kaşıklarının kullanılmaması ve hasta konforunun oldukça yüksek olmasıdır.
